STIRLING KITCHEN...BEFORE AND AFTER
The kitchen, meals and family room of this Stirling home was in desperate need of an update. What would have been an expensive and very high quality solid baltic pine kitchen in the late 1980’s just did not fit the current owners’ needs. The area was large but not well planned.
Dark Heritage Green feature cornices and timber chair rail visually lowered the ceiling, dividing and dating the space.
The Brief : My clients’ requests included provision for a pantry and more cupboard and bench space. Wine storage was also a priority. Maximum light was very important and the view over their property and the valley couldn’t be comprimised. Their style was influenced by traditional English and French kitchens but they didn’t know where to start.
Inspiration: Several factors influenced my inspiration for this kitchen. Apart from an affinity with England and France, my clients had collected some colourful treasured pieces whilst travelling as well as inheriting a collection of blue and white china. Existing cherry red leather sofas were also a big consideration for the colour scheme
In the new design, I completely reconfigured the space, which enabled a walk-in pantry to be created, with a central feature mantel, island bench and integrated fridge. I also allowed for an antique French dresser to house the blue and white china collection. New windows and expansive sliding doors were installed for easy access for entertaining on the deck.
I chose a soft taupe for both the walls and the stone benchtops, adding a hint of colour but still neutral enough to be a backdrop to blue, red and green. The cabinetry is a quarter strength of the wall colour.
Thank you to my lovely clients and my amazing cabinetmaker and builder for this rewarding project.
